![]() For example, Native American flute playing - one really common element in the traditional Native American flute playing is that someone would view a mountain line or the shape of a tree or the shape of a river or something, and they would try to create that type of shape in sound on the flute. SCHWARTZ: People have been doing this, we think, maybe since before there was even language. But Schwartz points out that there is a long tradition of trying to make sense of the world through music. RASCOE: The collider near Geneva, Switzerland, is the world's most powerful particle accelerator, an example of humankind's most cutting-edge technology. (SOUNDBITE OF DOMENICO VICINANZA'S "LHCHAMBER MUSIC") His first big project was almost a decade ago when he took data collected by the Large Hadron Collider and created this composition. Vicinanza says data sonification can be used to spot trends or patterns because listening to data is sometimes easier than poring over spreadsheets or graphs. RASCOE: The process of taking data and turning it into sound is called data sonification. I've never been in another situation where I was asked to sight read and then also add my own flair on the spot. Schwartz, a visiting professor of musicology at Fairmont State University, says the biggest challenge was that she couldn't predict how the Earth would tremble.ĪLYSSA SCHWARTZ: This was a whole new type of artistry, actually. The score was performed live by the flutist Alyssa Schwartz at a conference in Atlanta. The idea was that the musical notes would rise and fall with the vibrations created by the Earth's constantly shifting tectonic plates. The park is a hotbed - literally - of volcanic activity. RASCOE: Yellowstone is known for its hills and canyons and geysers and hot springs. VICINANZA: I love the way how music can inform and can actually do a very nice job at providing a window into science and into data. And last week, that data was real time seismic readings from Yellowstone. He developed a computer program that turns data into sheet music. ![]() RASCOE: Domenico Vicinanza is a physicist at Anglia Ruskin University in England. (SOUNDBITE OF DOMENICO VICINANZA AND ALYSSA SCHWARTZ'S "YELLOWSTONE GEYSERS SONIFICATION")ĭOMENICO VICINANZA: For me, it was a fantastic moment because I felt I was able to give voice to something that otherwise was really hidden. Hopefully the new one in Murphy is not ran like this one.Close your eyes and imagine being surrounded by the serene and untouched beauty of Yellowstone National Park. There is alot of work needing to be addressed, there just doesn't seem to be anyone with mindset or capabilities of direction to fix all that is wrong with this establishement. Playing pool is just too expensive unless you are a serious playor, I would rather play with quarters at the local pool halls. ![]() Drinks are a pain to get from the down stairs bar, not so with upstairs bar when it is open. I've come to see most often that the alley has become a dumping zone for parents wanting to go gamble while leaving there irritating teenagers and younger siblings over on the bowling alley, I can honestly only see this getting worse. ![]() Which is even more of a pain, takes forever to get a servers attention, most often you will see them over by the kiosk of there's, although I have come to enjoy certain ones, Kendra as a server, Justin, John and Phillip as counter and Samantha as very helpful in the arcade. This is my first time on the restaurant, normally I stick to league night on Tuesday. I've worked as waitress on and off for over ten yrs, I have never seen such a disorganized and poorly run place. Excuse for this is my server is the only one there and she's not even sopposedly to be there. Fifteen min later, drink and a burger later, not impressed with what I got. Put my drink and food order in was another twenty before I got my servers attention to ask again for my drink. Took ten minutes to be seated, then another fifteen to even be greeted by another person. Was sadly disappointed, didn't know which host stand to go to since there was not a host.
